OJOKORO LCDA PARTNERS LASEMA ON THE PREVENTION FLOOD DISASTER

As part of efforts to prevent flood disasters following the predicted heavy rainfalls in Lagos later this month and in September, the Executive Chairman of Ojokoro LCDA, Hon. Hammed Idowu D. Tijani is set to partner with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) for prompt response on emergency situations.

HID Tijani made this known at a sensitisation programme titled “FLOOD FREE LAGOS; 2023 “BUILDING FLOOD RESILIENCE
IS OUR COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY” in conjunction with LASEMA which held at the Council secretariat.

The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyitolu, who was present at the programme enlighten all stakeholders on the core responsibility of the Agency which is co-ordination of emergency management in Lagos State, working closely with all Stakeholders.

Dr Oke-Osanyitolu made it known that the topography of Lagos State is prone to flood which has necessitated the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Olushola Sanwo-Olu to provide preventive measures to curb flood disasters in areas affected with provision of concrete drainage systems and proper waste management facilities.

He therefore urged the people of Ojokoro LDCA not to build houses near rivers and canals because it is very dangerous.
“Build your houses on strong foundations as this is a means to withstand heavy downpour of rain” he said.

He further urged the people to cooperate with the Local Government Chairman and his officials on issues of flood.

“The Local Government along side LASEMA needs support of the communities to be able to tackle ecological problems holistically” he added.

Questions were asked by members of the CDAs, as regarding houses blocking the free flow of water, seeking for measures that can be taken to avoid such occurrence.

It worthy of note that the Council boss through the Department of Environment and Sanitation services have carried out regular desilting and carting away of refuse in drainages , construction of gutters and drainages to assist the free flow of water in the communities.

Mr Adeyemi Adebola the Council Manger while giving the closing remarks assured the community leaders of government’s prompt response to their complaints.

Present at the event are the Vice Chairman, Hon Oladipupo Coker: Hon. Tunde Oyekunle Leader of the Council; Hon. Jamiu Odebiyi, Supervisor for Environment,; Arc Makinde Sunday, the Council Engineer; Engr Olatunde Akinsanya, the Director of Operations LASEMA; Alhaji M.A Kazeem, who represented the Community Development Committee Chairman in Ojokoro LCDA, Barrister Samuel Alabi.
